Western Iowa Mutual Insurance Association

The mission of Western Iowa Mutual Insurance Association is to provide quality, affordable insurance to agricultural and residential policyholders through support of knowledgeable, loyal independent agents and fair, accurate claims adjustment while maintaining financial security.

Because the East Coast insurance companies did not understand Midwest perils and risk, a group of rural Pottawattamie County farmers in Hazel Dell Township founded their own insurance company in 1876 under the name Pottawattamie County Farmer’s Mutual Insurance Association. The name later changed to Pottawattamie Mutual Insurance Association, and again in 1998 to its current name, Western Iowa Mutual Insurance Association.

In 1993, Western Iowa Mutual was a 518 county mutual that was able to write only in six counties: Pottawattamie, Mills, Montgomery, Cass, Shelby, and Harrison. Today, Western Iowa Mutual is a 518A state-wide mutual that writes in forty-eight counties in southwestern, western, and central Iowa. These additional counties have allowed our company to have a spread of risk that is beneficial to our policyholders and our reinsurance carrier.

With an office based in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in Pottawattamie County, Western Iowa Mutual primarily writes homeowner and farm owner insurance in rural areas and smaller communities. We also write fire, wind, and allied lines insurance including inland marine. Our company is reinsured with Wisconsin Reinsurance Corporation of Madison, Wisconsin. We have two liability companies available to attach liability to our policies: IMT Insurance Company of Des Moines, Iowa, and 1st Auto & Casualty Insurance Company of Madison, Wisconsin.

Western Iowa Mutual is currently represented by one hundred independent agents writing in thirty agencies throughout the territory. We adjust our own claims and do our own inspections. Our home office is fully automated to allow for efficient processing and servicing of policies for our agents and policyholders. We are a financially secure company, owned by our policyholders, managed and operated by local people, and based in our writing territory.

Western Iowa Mutual continues to serve policyholders as did the founding fathers of our company. We look to the future as we strive to meet the needs of individuals and uphold the integrity of those establishing the company over one hundred years ago.
